Analysis of factors affecting difficulty in handling oral medicine using electronic medication notebook-based personal health records

A study using the harmo® electronic medication system found 24% of patients struggled to handle small tablets/capsules, particularly those with a combined length/width of ≤13.3 mm. Factors contributing to difficulty included impaired hand force, small formulation size, hypertension, and osteoporosis. These findings advocate for patient-centred oral medication design and prescribing practices to enhance adherence and safety.

Tablets and capsules are widely used forms of oral medication, but some patients experience difficulty handling them, which can reduce medication adherence and affect health outcomes. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to perceived handling difficulty, using data from harmo®, a nationwide electronic medication notebook system.
