Chikungunya (Frequently Asked Questions)

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease that causes sudden fever and severe joint pain.

Symptoms typically begin 4–8 days after a mosquito bite and include fever, muscle aches, rash (commonly maculopapular or morbilliform), arthralgia, and arthritis. The fever may be high (38.5–40°C) and persist for two to five days. Headache and muscle pain typically subsides after a few days. Severe joint pain (often involving the hands and feet) may last days to months. Fatigue may persist for weeks and even months in some cases.
