Temporary EML Update: Insulin Analogue Pens Added to Ensure Access Amid Human Insulin Shortages—Valid Until 2027!
As communicated in previous circulars: (1) Availability of Insulin Pen Sets dated 06 May 2024 and (2) Guidance on switching from insulin pen sets to insulin vials, and from human insulin products to insulin analogue products, there have been significant challenges in accessing human insulin pen sets. Insulin analogue pen sets are available on contract. To ensure equitable access to insulin pens, the specifically awarded insulin analogue products under contract HP06-2024SVP have been designated as essential medicines and temporarily added to the essential medicines list (EML). This temporary update to the EML will assist provinces in procuring these insulin pens in the absence of human insulin products. The EML status for these specific products remains valid until the end of contract HP06-2024SVP, which is 30 April 2027.
