Diphtheria situational report (week 47 of 2025)
The majority of confirmed cases and carriers (74%, 101/137) were from the Western Cape, comprising 57 respiratory diphtheria cases and 44 asymptomatic carriers.
Between 01 January 2024 and 23 November 2025, 81 confirmed cases of respiratory diphtheria, 2 probable respiratory diphtheria cases and 56 asymptomatic carriers of toxigenic C. diphtheriae, detected during contact tracing, have been identified in South Africa.
