Early versus late tracheostomy in people with multiple trauma
This review was initiated during the development of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies guideline on intensive care after multiple trauma in people with multiple trauma in the ICU.
A Cochrane review found very uncertain evidence that early tracheostomy (within 10 days) for adults with multiple trauma affects mortality, ICU stay, or pneumonia rates. A single randomised trial and 22 non-randomised studies showed no clear benefit. The evidence is limited by small sample sizes and differing study methods, so no firm conclusions can be drawn.
