Recommendations for Influenza Vaccine Composition for the 2026-2027 Northern Hemisphere Season
Following an analysis of global surveillance data, the WHO has announced updated viral composition recommendations for the 2026-2027 northern hemisphere influenza vaccines. These updates ensure vaccines remain effective against rapidly evolving strains, including the dominant new "subclade K" variant.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its official recommendations for the 2026-2027 northern hemisphere influenza vaccine composition. These updates are essential as influenza viruses constantly evolve, requiring twice-yearly consultations to analyse global surveillance data. The recent review highlighted the rapid global spread of a new A(H3N2) variant, "subclade K," which led to an earlier and more active flu season in many regions.
The recommendations cover both egg-based and cell-culture-based vaccines, incorporating specific A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and B/Victoria lineage-like viruses. Additionally, experts reviewed zoonotic influenza risks, recommending the development of a new candidate vaccine virus for the A(H9N2) strain to bolster pandemic preparedness.
