Vitamin D supplementation in pregnant or breastfeeding women or young children for preventing asthma
Randomised controlled studies evaluating vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy or early childhood for preventing childhood asthma have yielded inconclusive results.
A systematic review of 18 studies found limited evidence supporting a protective effect of vitamin D supplementation against childhood asthma. However, moderate-certainty evidence suggests high-dose vitamin D in pregnancy may reduce the risk of childhood wheeze. The review found less certainty regarding the effects of supplementing infants and children, highlighting the need for more high-quality studies.
