Weekly measles and rubella situation report (week 17 of 2026)
Rubella is a contagious viral infection that is usually mild but can cause serious complications in pregnancy, resulting in Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) in infants
Measles and rubella surveillance data and analyses are updated daily and reported weekly. The reported figures may be influenced by the number of specimens from suspected cases that the laboratory receives at the time of testing. Between 29 December 2025 and 26 April 2026 (ISO Weeks 1–17), a total of 250 laboratory-confirmed rubella cases were reported in South Africa through the national fever-rash surveillance system (data accessed 28 April 2026). This represents a decline compared with the same period in 2025.
