Mechanism of action

Lidocaine
Lidocaine inhibits the ionic refluxes required for the initiation and conduction of impulses, thereby stabilising the neuronal membrane. After absorption, lidocaine may cause stimulation of the central nervous system followed by depression, and in the cardiovascular system, it acts primarily on the myocardium where it may produce a decrease in electrical excitability, conduction rate and force of contraction. Lidocaine causes a reversible blockade of impulse propagation along nerve fibres by preventing the inward movement of sodium ions through the nerve membrane.

Fluorescein
Fluorescein sodium is used as an ophthalmologic diagnostic tool for corneal abrasions, corneal ulcers, herpetic corneal infections, and dry eye. Fluorescein does not stain a normal cornea but conjunctival abrasions are stained yellow or orange, corneal abrasions or ulcers are stained a bright green and foreign bodies are surrounded by a green ring.
