Mechanism of action
Lignocaine
Lignocaine inhibits the ionic refluxes required for the initiation and conduction of impulses, thereby stabilising the neuronal membrane. After absorption ligocaine may cause stimulation of the central nervous system followed by depression, and in the cardiovascular system, it acts primarily on the myocardium where it may produce a decrease in electrical excitability, conduction rate and force of contraction. Lignocaine causes a reversible blockade of impulse propagation along nerve fibres by preventing the inward movement of sodium ions through the nerve membrane.
Noradrenaline
Noradrenaline is a peripheral vasoconstrictor which acts on alpha adrenergic receptors. It is also an inotropic stimulator of the heart and dilator of coronary arteries as a result of its activity at the beta adrenergic receptors.
