Naphazoline Nitrate

Registered South African indications:

• Eye irritation
  - To provide relief from irritations to the eyes due to dust, allergies, sun glare, swimming, smoke, smog, exposure to wind and cinema

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or any of its excipients

Cautions

• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Pre-exisiting red eye condition
• Hypertension
• Diabetes mellitus
• Hyperthyroidism
• Cardiovascular abnormalities
• Arteriosclerosis
• Concomitant use of soft contact lenses

Eye irritation
- To provide relief from irritations to the eyes due to dust, allergies, sun glare, swimming, smoke, smog, exposure to wind and cinema

• Ophthalmic (opd): 2-3 drops into affected eye(s), 3-4hrly

Use with great caution, if at all, in infants and young children

Pregnancy

• Caution should be exercised as no studies have been conducted to determine safety

Breastfeeding

• Caution
• The presence of naphazoline in breastmilk following use of ophthalmic naphazoline is unknown. Therefore, caution is advised, when considering the use of ophthalmic naphazoline by breastfeeding mothers. Benefits should outweigh any potential risks to mother and foetus

Elderly

• No dose adjustment recommended

Porphyria Information

• Probably not porphyrinogenic (PNP)

Naphazoline is an alpha-adrenoreceptor agonist which causes vasoconstriction in the arterioles of the conjunctiva.
