|---|---|
| Brief outline/clinical setting | Non-typhoidal Salmonella bacteraemia occurs commonly in immunocompromised patients and is an AIDS-defining condition. |
| Aetiologies/organisms | Salmonella enterica |
| Optimal antimicrobial selection | Ceftriaxone 1g IVI BD |
| Duration | tailor therapy according to culture results. Total duration 14 days |
| Alternative if allergic/not available | Third generation cephalosporins are regarded as 2nd line therapy for invasive NTS infections. Ciprofloxacin is regarded as 1st line agent in view of its efficacy against intracellular gram-negative bacteria; however due to resistance to ciprofloxacin (and the adverse effects associated with quinolones), ceftriaxone is preferred for empiric therapy. In addition, current rates of resistance to ceftriaxone are lower than that to ciprofloxacin at CMJAH. |
