Prioritisation of Referrals: Definitions in Ophthalmology Emergencies
Referral guidelines – Prioritisation of referrals
Urgent (potentially vision threatening requiring immediate treatment)
Discuss immediately with on call registrar.
Semi-urgent (potentially vision threatening but does not require immediate treatment)
Discuss with ophthalmology registrar that day or the next day if presents overnight
Non-urgent – contact appropriate eye clinic to make booking – requirements will vary.

Referral not required – can be safely followed up by day hospital, clinic or GP
