Geography of the Neonatal Unit
Ward 16b comprises of:
- Admissions cubicle; cubicles 1 and 2 for babies in incubators; cubicle 3 and 5 for babies mostly in cribs; cubicle 4 for babies transferred out of NICU; cubicles 6, 7 and side cubicles for sepsis cohorting/isolation
- The bed-status of ward 16b is 35 babies, but usually more than 40-50 babies are admitted. Hence the nursing staff is often very pressurized. Please take this into account (though expect a reasonable standard of work)
Kangaroo Mother Care accommodates up to 16 mothers.
NICU has 10 beds. Admissions to NICU should always be discussed with the sister-in-charge in NICU, but this is invariably the registrar’s responsibility.
Labour ward (ward 5) is on the 2nd floor.
Caesarian theatre is on the 4th floor.
The theatre change rooms are on the 3rd floor:
- Door codes (male) 2444# (female) 4222#
The postnatal wards:
- Ward 7 (post Caesar) and 8 (post NVD), are on the 2nd floor
- Ward 12 (high risk postnatal) is on the 3rd floor.
- Sometimes postnatal patients overflow into the gynae wards (9 & 10) on the 3rd floor.
Rahima Moosa Hospital referral area:
Rahima Moosa Hospital provides neonatal services to the western part of Johannesburg and its surrounds, and has over 13 000 deliveries/year. Our antenatal clinics are Discoverers and OR Tambo clinic. Sick babies from these clinics are referred to ward 16b for admission. We also serve as a referral hospital for neonates from Leratong and Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospitals. Please bear in mind that referring doctors often work in sub-optimal conditions. Alexandra Clinic refers their neonates directly to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital.
Work hours
Interns, MOs and registrars are expected to start promptly at or before 08h00 on weekdays (07:30 on weekdays/public holidays) and to take a brief but thorough handover from the night intern/MO (in ward 16b) and registrar (NICU). A hand-over should occur before the 08h00 meetings on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The afternoon hand-over to the night staff is at 15h00 and starts in NICU then proceeds to ward 16b.
