Thinking of becoming a paediatric registrar?

District level hospital guidelines applicable for interns and comm service doctors. Published in 2016

TIPS to improve your chances of getting a post. This is NOT a guarantee but is guidance to assist you.

  1. Do 6 to 12 months as a medical officer in an academic department of Paediatrics.
  2. Get the FCP (Paeds) Part 1 exam (having a DCH is helpful but rather do the Part 1 first if you are staying in Paeds)
  3. Do advanced life support courses such as the APLS or PALS and Neonatal Resuscitation course
  4. Ensure you work hard and strive to obtain good to excellent reference letters from at least two seniors as well as Departmental performance records displaying your track record. Best if references are blinded ones.
  5. Start considering a mini research project that would be worthy of an MMed (speak to a consultant about this)
  6. Make use of the Mentor assigned to you for the six months. Meet with him/her and ask for honest feedback on your performance. Speak to a Paediatric registrar too on how you can improve your chances.
  7. There is no secret to getting a good to an excellent record from the Dept – work hard, be professional, be eager to learn, go the extra mile, work well within a team, BE PUNCTUAL ALWAYS, be caring, write good notes and keep reading !
  8. Ask yourself do I enjoy working with children and their parents ? Paeds is a hard but rewarding specialty.
