Recommendations for this combination product as per highest risk category when comparing individual active ingredients
Pregnancy
- Caution (Magnesium carbonate)
- Magnesium crosses the placenta; serum concentrations in the fetus are similar to those in the mother. Magnesium carbonate is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk
- Data on a large number of exposed pregnancies indicate no adverse effects of calcium carbonate tablets on pregnancy or on the health of the fetus/newborn child. To date no other epidemiological date are available
Breastfeeding
- Compatible (Calcium carbonate, Magnesium carbonate)
- No problems are anticipated when using this product during lactation
- Magnesium is found in breast milk, concentrations remain constant during the first year of lactation and are not influenced by dietary intake under normal conditions. Magnesium requirements are the same in lactating and nonlactating females
Renal Impairment
| CrCl (ml/min) | Dose |
| ≥ 30 | No adjustment necessary |
| < 30 | Oral (chu): 500-1000mg, as needed; Max: 2g/24hrs |

Mechanism of action
Calcium carbonate
Calcium carbonate reacts chemically to neutralise or buffer existing quantities of stomach acid but has no direct effect on its output. This action results in an increased pH of the stomach contents, thus providing relief of hyperacidity symptoms. It also reduces acid concentrations within the lumen of the oesophagus, thus causing an increase in intra-oesophageal pH and a decrease in pepsin activity, which aids the control of gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Magnesium carbonate
Magnesium carbonate neutralises excess acid in the stomach by reacting with gastric hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride and carbon dioxide.
