Administration directions
Oral
- Mix powder with 20-100ml of water or syrup from 20-100ml
- Sorbitol should be coadministered to prevent constipation
Rectal
- Dose should be given at body temperature in a 150-200ml plain water, 10% dextrose in water or equal parts of water and 2% methyl cellulose suspension
Mechanism of action
Polystyrene sulfonate is a cation exchange resin for the treatment of hyperkalaemia. It binds ingested potassium and the indigestible potassium polystryene sulfonate complex is excreted with the faeces, preventing the absorption of potassium into the bloodstream. This results in decreased serum potassium levels.
