Mechanism of action
Magnesium is the second most abundant cation in intracellular fluid and is an essential body electrolyte. It is a factor in a number of enzyme systems, and is involved in neurochemical transmission and muscular excitability. Parenterally administered magnesium sulphate exerts a depressant effect on the central nervous system and acts peripherally to produce vasodilation. It causes direct inhibition of action potentials in myometrial muscle cells. Excitation and contraction are uncoupled, which decreases the frequency and force of contractions.
